Trust & Safety
Heylo is a safe space for groups. People come here to belong and connect with each other, and safety is essential.
Privacy by default
A few privacy protections are built in:
- Groups are private by default. Private groups are not visible in Discovery, search, or on members' profiles. Groups can toggle their privacy settings anytime.
- You can only receive messages from people you share a group with. Leaders of public groups may be contacted by prospective members.
Your safety tools
A few things you control directly, anytime:
- Block. Stop any user from sending you direct messages.
- Leave. Leave any group chat or group at any time.
- Mute. Silence notifications from a group or conversation without leaving it.
If you're a leader, you also have tools to manage your own group:
- Remove. Remove any member from your group.
- Ban. Ban any member. Banned members cannot rejoin your group or register for your group's events.
- Delete. Delete any message or event in your group.
Reporting others
To report another user, open their profile and select Report.
You can also email us at support@heylo.com. You don't need a Heylo account to report a concern.
How we handle reports
Reports are reviewed by our team. We look at the context and account history.
Heylo does not manually moderate groups. We may share a report with the group's leaders where appropriate, and we ask permission before sharing any personal information.
If a report points to a specific violation of our Terms of Service, Heylo takes direct action. Depending on what we find, we may remove content, suspend an account, or terminate an account. For serious violations, we don't issue a warning first. The account may be suspended or terminated right away.
We may not always be able to share the outcome with you.
For the full list of what's not allowed on Heylo, see the acceptable use section of our Terms of Service.
Automated moderation
We use automated tools to detect spam and unwanted or illegal imagery. Flagged content may be hidden, removed, or sent to our team for review.
Image scanning is used only for moderation. We don't use it for advertising or personalization.
If an automated decision affects you, you can ask for human review by emailing support@heylo.com.
Appeals
If your content was removed or your account was suspended and you think we got it wrong, email support@heylo.com.
Include your account details and a short explanation of why you're appealing. We'll review it and get back to you.
Child safety
Heylo is not for users under 13. If we learn a user is under 13, we delete their account.
We report child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) as required by law.
If you're a parent or guardian and you think your child has an account on Heylo, email support@heylo.com.
Law enforcement
Law enforcement requests should be sent to support@heylo.com.
We require valid legal process, such as a subpoena, court order, or warrant, depending on the type of data requested. We do not provide user data in response to informal requests.
We will notify the affected user unless we are legally prohibited from doing so.
