WHY SPRINT IF YOU’RE A DISTANCE RUNNER?
Short, fast efforts teach your body to move more efficiently, so your easy miles start to feel easier. Research on trained distance runners found that adding sprint intervals improved running economy and endurance, and even cut time off their 3K. Plyos like bounds and jumps have been shown to improve running economy too, especially when you pair them with strength work. Sprinting also builds the finishing kick you’ll want at the end of your next race, and it gets a lot of work done in a short session. You don’t have to be fast to get these benefits. You just have to show up and push at your own effort.
