Heights Track Tuesday Etiquette
As you’ve no doubt noticed, our workouts have become quite popular and last week we even had a record number of attendees. That’s a good thing, of course, as the energy creates such a vibrant atmosphere. However, in the interest of everyone’s safety and enjoyment, we (Chandlyr, Viet, and Bob) would like to issue a few reminders regarding Tuesday evening Track Etiquette:
(1) We are guests of the Heights High School and thus all students, teachers, parents, coaches, etc have priority over us. Do not ask any of them to get out of your way as you run and do not ever have any sort of verbal altercation with staff or students. This should go without saying but we had an incident a few years ago when a non-Strider happened to run his workout at the same time as ours. As he strived to run his coach-given splits, the runner yelled, “Get off the track!” at a lingering football player. In response, the next week I (Bob) was called aside and received a very long and very vocal reminder from the head coach of our status while on school grounds.
(2) While doing your warmup and cooldown laps, run clockwise in the outer lanes. Other people use the track, too, and we need to keep Lanes 1 and 2 free for those who are doing their own workouts. This brings us to Point #3.
(3) When running repetitions with your respective group, run in Lane 1. You, while training, have every right to run in Lane 1. Doing so creates a long, narrow string of humanity and thus makes it easier for the faster groups to pass. We know the thought process of, “I’m slower than others and thus it’s better for me to cede Lane #1 to the fast runners” but running in lanes 2,3, and 4 creates human walls and actually prevents the speedsters from passing. This is important, as you should never be passed on your left shoulder while running. Walking should be done in the outer lanes, however.
(4) When you finish your repetition, do not immediately stop at the finish line. Instead, continue your run for another 10-15 meters before angling to the left (the infield) or the right (the outfield), pointing in the direction you plan to travel. Chances are someone will be hot on your heels as you finish and any sudden stoppage creates a dangerous situation
(5) Spitting. If you must spit but please don’t do so directly onto the track or in another person’s immediate vicinity. Yes, people have complained about both actions.
(6) As it gets darker, consider wearing a light of some sort such as a headlamp or a vest. Houston’s ambient lighting will enable you to see the track and those in your vicinity but illumination allows others to see you.
In short – have fun and enjoy the amazing energy (and PRs!) but be mindful of others. Let’s keep Track Tuesday as the best day of the week.
