About
๐ŸŒฟ WALK SE ENGLAND: Handcross - The Hyde & Old Crocs
Led by: Judy Carbone
Distance: Approx 5 miles
Meeting point: Old Brighton Road South, Pease Pottage, RH11 9AG. What 3 Words: //////poses.grudging.sensual
Parking is on the road, close to the bridge over the A23. The What 3 words reference will give you the best indication of location.
Pace: Gentle and inclusive - no one left behind
1st November is the London-Brighton Old Crocs Race, which passes through Handcross. There will be lots of spectators in the area, which limits our parking options, and means a longer walk, but this will give us the opportunity to wave at the classic cars, bicycles (and the odd Penny Farthing) as they pass by.
We will cross the bridge over the A23 and turn right, following the road towards Handcross. After approximately 1 mile we will turn into the Front Drive of The Hyde Estate, crossing a second bridge over the A23. We'll walk past the pond on the right, following the drive round and enjoying the autumn leaves on the trees. The path winds gently downhill until we take the left hand path, where a short, more marked downhill section gives us a beautiful view across the lake and the 'Wild Garden'.
We then follow a steep uphill path, with woodland either side, for roughly 500m. We will take this at a leisurely pace and no-one will be left behind. As we come to the top of the hill there is a lovely bench on the left and we can stop here for a snack and drink.
We will continue along the path and then leave The Hyde, turning left, heading back towards the village. Inevitably we'll cross the A23 (again!) and turn left by the pub. Heading through the village, there will inevitably be spectators on the pavements, enjoying the Old Crocs, until the crowd starts to thin a little as we leave the village and head back to our start point.
The route follows paths which are mainly tarmac and currently in good condition. However, the paths around The Hyde can be prone to flooding, should we have significant rainfall before 1 November. As such I would suggest sensible shoes.
