Exploration of the Finnich Glen famed for the Devil's Pulpit (a rock in the middle of the river) and its blood-red waters. The area featured in the Outlander series.
The plan is to explore the area of the Finnich Glen and Devil's Pulpit followed by a circular walk in the area through the Dualt Glen (there's supposed to be a waterfall there) and local farmland.
Although most of the walk will be straightforward, the descent into Finnich Glen is steep and very likely to be slippy. Although there have been a number of incidents in the area, for experienced hillwalkers with good footwear it should not present any real difficulty. Proper walking boots are absolutely essential for this section of the walk. Once down into the glen, if we want to proceed to the Devil's Pulpit we will probably have to wade upstream in the river. For this section you may wish to change into something like wellies/crocs/sandals etc. If you do this bit in your boots then it would be a good idea to bring some dry socks with you to change into afterwards.
For anyone not confident with the descent into the glen then it will be possible to miss this out and return by our outward route to re-join the planned route.
To leave the glen we will have the choice of either returning by the steep slope that we came down or it should be possible to continue to downstream (possibly further wading) for an easy route across grass fields.
After this the remainder of the walk should be straightforward. Please click on the route link below to see the intended route.
Numbers will be limited so early booking for this walk is advisable. Guest places will only be available once members have been given the chance to secure their place.
If the water level is high we may be restricted in what we can do in the glen. If there has been recent heavy rain the descent may not be advisable and we will need to be flexible.
As parking in the area can be tricky we will also need to be flexible with our plans.

Grade: Bronze (applicable to the walking section only) - see grading information at

Meeting details: TBA. Probably 09:30 so that we can get an early start as this is a very popular / busy place. Meeting point might be the Finnich Glen parking area but please don't make any assumptions on this as we may use an alternative. As parking is limited and busy it would be sensible to car share and reduce the number of cars we take with us. Please ensure that you are are part of our pre-walk WhatsApp group so that you can be kept updated! If you don't use WhatsApp make sure you let us know.
