About
🌊 From Whitstable to Hythe, winding through the Kentish Downs before meeting the sea. Riders can choose their distance: a one-way trip or the full loop back to Whitstable. Either way, it’s all about challenging climbs, salty air, and good company with Queers on Wheels.
🚂 The ride starts at Whitstable station which is 1hr 20mins from St Pancras and Stratford International.
🗺️ There are two ride options. One coast to coast or two - Single or Double. The Single is from Whitstable to Hythe. The Double is back again to Whitstable via a different route.
🍷 The Single - Whitstable to Hythe. 50km and c500m of climbing. The route is undulating along quiet lanes apart from one flat stretch between Whitstable and Faversham where there can be more traffic. The hills are sharp and test your legs. The reward is a pleasant downhill to the sea at Hythe. After refuelling by the beach you can return to London by train. Return trains are from Sandling (4km back uphill on the route) which take c1hr 30mins to London Bridge/Charing Cross or from Folkestone West (8km away) for trains Stratford and St Pancras that take about an hour. Similar price differences.
🚲 The Single is suitable for a cyclist with some experience but wanting to test themselves. The route is pretty and varied but you’ll need to low gears to climb the hills!
🏎️ The pace will be steady.
🍷🍷 The Double - Back to Whitstable. In total it is 92km and c1,000m of climbing. Some sharp hills out of Hythe and then some beautiful flat stretches to Canterbury and then a gravel section for c5km back to Whitstable. Option for seafood on the front at Whitstable if you have time. Return trains from Whitstable to either Stratford International/St Pancras or to Victoria.
🚲 This is suitable for an experienced cyclist who is comfortable with several steep climbs over a c100km route.
🏎️ The pace on the way back will be steady with some longer climbs but then some fast flatter sections.
⏰ There is one train per hour so we need to be on a specific one. 09:20 from St Pancras or 09:27 from Stratford International arriving at Whitstable at 10:36. No bike reservation needed but there isn’t a designated cycle space so you have to chance it in the accessible section or a random doorway. We start riding about 10:45 to allow for some queer faffing.
☕️ There isn’t a stop mid-route so we ride direct to Hythe where there is a pub immediately we reach the beach. There is also a cafe a little further along depending on your levels of hunger and budget.

🍽️ For those taking on the Double, there’s the reward of a great seafood spot waiting at the finish—perfect for a splash-out treat after the ride.💦

🔦 Bring all the usual paraphernalia for cycling including your helmet, inner tube, levers, pump, etc and also some lights. Most of the ride will be done in the daylight but because of the clocks change the last bit of the ride might be in the dark and your ride home from the train will definitely be in the dark.
