Straight roads babe; straight roads.
🗺️ This ride starts and ends at Cambridge station. It is a ride in three sections: 30km to Ely: 30km to Newmarket: and 30km back to Cambridge. We will stop at cafes in Ely and Newmarket for refuelling and finish in Cambridge.
Three route length options: 30km (to Ely) 60km (to Newmarket) or 90km (back to Cambridge).
This ride has two characters.
The first part takes in straight roads. Wide roads that trace their way across Cambridgeshire in long straight sections. The topography is very flat with a few islands that rise majestically above the Fens. The straight roads allow you to get into a rhythm and give the thighs a workout. Only the winds can slow you down!
The second part of the ride leaves Newmarket and climbs away to a more undulating section. There isn’t a lot of elevation in the whole route but almost all the climbing is in the last third of the ride, so save some energy! The last 15km back into Cambridge is mostly downhill or flat and can be fast (if your legs allow it!).
🚙 The main roads leaving and entering Cambridge have good cycle paths on the wide pavements which you should use. The rest of the ride is along lanes and B roads which can have some fast traffic so you need to be comfortable with this and ride appropriately.
🏎️ The route can be good for a faster than usual pace but it depends on the wind direction. We will check the weather in the days leading up to the ride. The two stops at Ely and Newmarket means we’ll all catch up together at those points and at the end in Cambridge. There is also the option to return to London by train from Ely or Newmarket if you prefer a shorter ride.
🚂 Train options depending on where you live:
09:24 from Kings Cross arrives in Cambridge at 10:15.
Or
08:54 from Liverpool Street calls at Tottenham Hale at 09:07 and arrives in Cambridge at 10:09.
⏰ We start riding at 10:30.
☕️ Refreshment stops are both on the route in Ely and Newmarket.
Straight roads, Queer fun!
