About
⚒️ A B O U T Y O U N G G E O L O G I S T S
Join us for a hands-on, lecture-free introduction to earth science! Designed for kids ages 5+ (siblings welcome), our interactive events explore local trails, rock identification, and Virginia’s unique geological history.
🪨 Kids will track progress toward earning three badges to graduate as a Young Geologist: Role of a Geologist, Virginia Geology, and Rock Collection. Physical badges and certificates will be awarded at our Graduation Ceremony & Rock Swap on Sunday, December 13th.
🪨 You do not have to travel to every event to finish the series—multiple local Richmond-area opportunities will be offered to earn each badge.
🪨 Kids will receive a geology sticker at the end of every event to add to their field notebooks!
📅 T O D A Y ' S E V E N T: Bedrock Exploration & Geode Cracking Lab at the Dry Rocks (October 24)
Assigned Badge: 🗺️ Virginia Geology
The Focus: Today we are setting up an active field-testing lab directly on the exposed bedrock of the James River. Our young geologists will study cross-cutting rock features, learn how to run diagnostic scratch and streak tests on natural granite formations, and wrap up with an exciting geode-cracking lab.
Trail Distance: Less than 1 mile. We will walk down to the exposed riverbed flats and remain stationary for our diagnostic testing and lab work. Kids will have plenty of free time for climbing and exploring the rocks.
Stroller Friendly: No. Navigating the natural, uneven granite river flats involves climbing over large stones, crevices, and rugged terrain.
🔍 Geology Activities
Exposed Bedrock Diagnostics: We will examine the massive downtown granite formations up close to map out how tectonic pressure and rushing river paths shape local bedrock.
Streak and Scratch Field Labs: Kids will use porcelain plates and unglazed tiles to run diagnostic tests on unknown specimens, learning how field scientists classify minerals by their physical properties.
The Geode Cracking Station: We will learn how hollow crystal pockets form inside volcanic and sedimentary rocks. We will use a piñata-style approach to safely crack open a geode and discover what grew inside.
🎒 What to Bring & Wear
The Gear: Bring your child's pocket field notebook and a pencil. We will pass out our shared loaner geology toolkits at check-in. Helmets are completely optional for families who prefer them (it's difficult to keep up with kids on the dry rocks and helmets can provide some piece of mind), and we will provide the required safety goggles for the geode-cracking lab.
The Essentials: Always bring water and snacks for your family.
Clothing: Dress in comfortable outdoor active layers. Wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes with excellent traction for safely walking on slick or sloped river rocks.
🛑 Registration & Cancellation Policy Because we are deploying our shared toolkit backpacks and distributing a fixed stash of reference geodes for the lab station, this event is strictly capped at 20 families. Please only sign up if you are entirely certain your family can attend.
Strict Attendance Policy: Any no-shows or cancellations made within 12 hours of the event without directly notifying the host will forfeit your child's eligibility to participate in any other limited-attendance young geology events for the remainder of the program.
