Thanks to the YHA and the Festival of Walking, we are running another social walking weekend - no course or learning, just some guided walks and a lovely weekend with other plus size people from the Every Body Outdoors community! There will be two different walks run each day run by qualified and experienced leaders, with different lengths/difficulties to make it accessible for as many people as possible.
•
Location: YHA Clun Mill
in Shropshire •
Accommodation: Accommodation is in bunk dorm rooms so you will be sharing with others. No individual rooms are available. There will be an opportunity nearer the time to share if you know other people coming along who you would like to be in a room with and we will do our best to accommodate requests.
•
Timings: You are welcome to arrive any time from 5pm on the Friday night. Walks will run on Saturday and Sunday, finishing around 4pm on the Sunday.
•
Cost: This project is part funded by the YHA as part of their Festival of Walking. As a result we are able to offer the weekend on a sliding scale of £60/£80/£100
•
Walk only: We have a limited number of spaces for people who may be local or not staying in the bunkhouse and wish to join just for the walks.
•
Travel: The closest train station to the bunkhouse is Craven Arms. Please book at taxi to the YHA or use the Chat function within Heylo to coordinate lifts with other attendees at the weekend.
•
Food: We will arrange basic food for Friday and Saturday evening (we anticipate this costing an additional £5-10 per person) but you will need to bring food for breakfasts, lunches and snacks.
•
Dogs: Unfortunately this is a dog free event, including people joining just for the walks
Worried about coming on your own? EBO events are really friendly and a lot of people will be coming without knowing anyone. We'll set up a WhatsApp group in advance of the event to help ease any anxieties!
On each day we will have two guided walk options, led by a qualified leader, and all walks will be led at a gentle pace and with the group always kept together. All walks will have a second person with the group who will backstop the walk and help manage the group.
Shorter: These will be around 5-6km in length, and will involve a small amount of elevation. They will be predominantly on good paths and are suitable for people who are new to hiking or those who prefer a gentler walk.
Longer: These will be a maximum of 8km in length and may involve up to 450m of elevation. These walks may also go over more uneven ground and are suitable for people with more experience of hiking.
We will have two qualified walk leaders to lead our walks.
Cat Forster from Latitude 534: "I am a Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor based in Llanberis, North Wales, and I run courses in all areas of the outdoors, such as teaching people how to rock climbing or how to use a map and compass. I am passionate about introducing people to hill walking , especially people who think or have been told ‘it’s not for them’. I run a company called Latitude 534, and my work is all about high-quality instruction, providing supportive and inclusive access to the outdoors. The hills and mountains are for everyone, both for fun, exciting adventures, and also some time to sit, enjoy and find some space to breathe."
Chrissy Humphrey is based in Shropshire and is a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader. She is also the regional EBO volunteer for Shropshire and runs local walks through her own community, Gather and Roam.
