About
Greetings Everyone - Join us on Sunday as we walk from Omaha to Tawharanui along the coast.
🟡 Some words to Inspire you: The coastal walk from the southern end of Omaha Beach to Tāwharanui Regional Park is one of the most beautiful short adventures north of Auckland—a mix of sandy beaches, coastal rocks, park land and a stunning final beach.
This route is not normally traversed as it is tide dependent. The date of our walk has been carefully chosen, with a low tide in the middle of the day, so that we can reach Tawharanui and return without any major water obstacles but we will still need to keep to time.
The route starts at Omaha Beach and runs around the coast until we reach the predator fence of the Tawharanui Open Sanctuary. At that point we will detour off the coast and climb up some low hills. This takes us to a higher view point from where we can look directly east over the park.
We then follow a route, not often taken in the park, that goes up and down some small grassy hills leading us towards the crown jewel of Tawharanui, Anchor Bay and its surrounds.
Here we will stop for lunch, to enjoy the views, before returning directly along the coast.
Duration: About 6 - 8 hours hike return including stops. Distance: Approx 14 - 16km return Difficulty: 2.5 on our 1-5 scale for day hikes.
Cost for Car Poolers: $20 Please pay the driver cash at Freemans Bay, otherwise you may not be able to come.
Toilets: At the start by the surf club and at lunch in Tawharanui
Low Tide: 12:00pm
