We’re caravanning from Bend to Crack in the Ground, a wild volcanic fissure in Oregon’s high desert where you can hike inside a giant lava crack.
Expect a ~2+ hr drive each way: paved highway, then several miles of graded, washboard gravel that’s easy terrain for a Rivian. No services or charging at the trailhead, but there is a pit toilet.
The hike is an easy–moderate 3–4 miles with sand, rocks, and fun boulder scrambles, plus cooler temps down in the crack and sunny desert on top. Non‑technical, but you should be comfortable on uneven terrain and some narrow, slot‑like sections.
Drivers: plan to leave Bend at 100% battery. The nearest RAN charger is ~91 miles (Crescent) from the trailhead, so plan your round‑trip plus buffer.
Bring: sturdy closed‑toe shoes, layers, sun protection, at least 2L water, snacks & lunch for tailgating, small daypack.
Optional: trekking poles, light gloves, camera, tire repair kit.
We’ll set a relaxed group pace with plenty of time for photos, exploring, and EV geeking along the way.
The hike is on BLM land. So no permits are required for the hike or parking.
Dogs are welcome an no leash requirements. Moxie says to bring all your dogs!
Caravan info: we will meet at the Springhill Suites Tesla chargers at 8am, rolling out at 8:20am. SpringHill Suites Marriott, 551 SW Industrial Way, Bend, OR 97702
