The Irish novelist turns his hand to the western in this dazzling tale of lovers on the run in 1890s Montana.
Barry’s books are known for their stylistic brilliance, and The Heart in Winter is no exception. Terse and acrobatic, the novel effortlessly walks the line between goofy and gothic.
It’s a wedding of Cormac McCarthy with Flann O’Brien; a western but also the most Irish of novels; a tragedy written as farce.
Everyone is welcome to our monthly book discussion. We share views and impressions of our chosen book in a moderated discussion. Opinions are often divided, but the debate is always friendly and respectful.
We gather in the downstairs bar at The Victoria from 7.30. We can usually be found near the John Bright St entrance. The meeting proper begins in the upstairs room at 8.00 sharp and lasts two hours with a half-time drinks break.
There is more socialising time after the meeting.
For more information about the group and about how our events work, see our group page at: https://heylo.group/the-birmingham-book-club
All our meetings are over-subscribed. If you have accepted a place at the meeting, but your plans subsequently change, you must update your RSVP as soon as possible. Someone from the waitlist can then take your place. Unfortunately we do have to block persistent 'no shows' from future meetings in order to be fair to everyone.
