Greetings Everyone - Join us on Sunday as we walk around the northern coast from Matiatia Wharf to Little Oneroa Bay on Waiheke finishing the day at the Waiheke Bowls Club.
🟡 Some words to Inspire you:
Join us for a fantastic walk exploring the natural side of Waiheke Island. Meeting at Matiatia Wharf our route follows the scenic cliff-top Te Ara Hura paths on the north side of the island dropping deep into the bays and back up to the tops of each peninsula offering stunning views across the Hauraki Gulf and back to Auckland City.
Our walk finishes at the friendly Waiheke Bowling Club on Causeway Road, where we can celebrate the day with drinks in the sunshine before catching an AT bus back to the ferry terminal.
Duration: About 4 - 4.5 hours hike including stops.
Distance: Approx 10 - 12 km.
Difficulty: 2.5 - 2.75 on our 1-5 scale for day hikes.
Low Tide: 7:46am
Toilets: Use at the wharf, at Oneroa Beach and at the bowls club.
🟡 Costs:
$62 Return ferry travel to Waiheke. You pay this at ferry terminal.
$2.80 Bus from Bowls Club to Ferry. You will need an AT Card (or credit card).
$12.50 (optional) Enjoy a cheeseboard on arrival at the Bowls Club.
🟡 Carpooling:
No car pooling will be organised for this event.

14:30 - All arrive The Waiheke Bowls Club
14:30 - 15:30 The Waiheke Bowls Club (optional)
15:30 - Catch AT Bus to Matiatia Wharf for ferry
17:00 - Arrive back at CBD

🟡 Walk Description & Directions:
Step off the ferry at Matiatia Wharf and turn left and north along the shoreline passing the historic red dinghy shed. Follow the wooden Te Ara Hura marker posts as the trail climbs steeply up into the Matietie Historic Reserve. Follow the singletrack as it snakes along the high cliff tops past Cable Bay's outer edge, keeping the ocean on your left and the open farmland on your right.
From the Pā terraces, follow the path down a steep flight of wooden steps into Owhanake Bay across the stony shoreline of the bay looking for the wide, mowed-grass DOC bypass trail climbing out from the rear valley of the beach. Follow this steady incline up through regenerating native bush until it meets Korora Road. Walk south for 15 minutes along the road until you locate the public pedestrian reserve track on your left, which drops you straight onto the sand of Big Oneroa Beach noting the Public toilets on the beach reserve.
Walk due east along Big Oneroa Beach and because of the rising tide, walk to the very eastern end of the beach and ascend the public concrete steps into the Miro Road Cliff Reserve. Walk up the short residential stretch of Miro Road, turn right onto Waiheke Road, and follow the wide grassy verge down the hill into Little Oneroa Beach Reserve.
From Little Oneroa playground, turn your back to the sea and walk directly up Ocean View Road, turning into Telley Road, then Surfdale Road until you see the clubhouse of the Waiheke Bowling Club on your left.
The Return Trip: When you are ready to leave, walk to the end of the road, cross over the main road and up the hill slightly to catch any of the buses (Route 501, 502, or 506) heading towards Matiatia Ferry Terminal.

Safety and togetherness are our priorities. We will make stops at all track junctions to ensure the group stays together.
Punctuality is key, and we will depart on time, so please be prompt.
