About
This varied and beautiful loop starts from the Visitor Center picnic area with a steep ascent to the mesa top across from Bandelier's most-visited archeological sites. During our long traverse west and north on the Frijoles Rim Trail, we leave the crowds behind and gain periodic stunning views down into Frijoles Canyon. With luck, we may spot a large elk herd, as I did my previous time on this route; and we will definitely encounter evidence of the 2011 fire that scarred much of this remote area of the park. At the hike's half-way point, we drop 400 feet to the Upper Crossing and start our return along lovely Frijoles Creek. Crossing the stream more than twenty times in six miles, our footwear may get a little wet, but usually well-placed rocks and fallen logs come to our aid. Several miles down the canyon, the walls close in as we pass through an impressive area called The Narrows. In the last stretch of the hike, we skirt Bandelier's best-preserved Ancestral Puebloan sites as we make our way back to the start.
Rating: Strenuous due to distance Distance: 14 miles Gain: 1,400 feet Dogs: Not allowed, except for leashed service animals Drive: 88 RT miles, so $9 to driver
