Grosse-Isle is an island in the St-Lawrence about half an hour downstream from Quebec City, where the river begins to widen. It is well known as our "Ellis Island" housing many Irish immigrants coming to Canada during the Great Famine (1845). It served to islate these individuals in order to protect Canada from epidemics (cholera, typhus, etc.). Thousands of Irish immigrants died on the island. Grosse-Isle today has a moving memorial dedicated to those that succumbed to the conditions of transatlantic travel and the subsequent quarantine with its unsanitary environment. Years later, the island served as a "safe" location for the Canadian biological weapons research centre during WWII and Korea.
Walking about the island you cannot help but be moved by the plight of the immigrants as they reached the land they hoped would allow them to escape the misery of the famine. The island is reached by a 30min ferry ride and contains both the isolation facilities (contrasting privileged and commoner facilities), housing for the staff, and the mass graves/memorial.
The ride is still in development, but it will include an overnight stay at the Day's Inn in Montmagny. The trip has costs associated with it: hotel, ferry, entry to facilities which I estimate at slightly less than $200 all together.
