A lovely walk, just under 6km in length starting in Pontypool Park. We'll head up through the park to the Shell Grotto, then along country path, with stunning views across farm land and hills. After passing the Folly Tower, originally built c.1765 by John Hanbury Esq. of Park House, Pontypool, we'll follow a quiet country road (Folly Lane) that winds down to a pretty church. A safe path leads us through wooded land skirting the village of Penygarn, before dropping back into Pontypool park.
Cafe, toilets and play area available at the start/end point.
The route is not overly challenging but the distance and ascent at the beginning may prove difficult for some, including younger children. You are the best judge of the ability of yourself and family. You could easily turn back at the Grotto or Folly Tower if finding it too much.
⚠️ Caution: it's likely to be muddy and possibly wet in parts. Sensible footwear for the conditions suggested (hiking boots, trail shoes or sturdy shoes that can be worn on mud). Similarly, suitable warm clothing/layers,including a waterproof jacket, hat and gloves advised; it can be quite windy/exposed on some sections heading up to the Folly Tower.
The walk will go ahead in most weather but may be canceled if deemed a risk to those participating.
β˜• Cafe and toilets in Pontypool Leisure Centre opposite the play park.
πŸ• Well behaved dogs are welcome but should be kept on a leads.
πŸ’¦ Please bring water and snacks to sustain you for the walk.
