Around 2017, Madonna relocated to Lisbon so her son could join the youth academy of the Benfica football club. She bought a house and spent a lot of time around Troia, the place that inspired her song La Isla Bonita (she initially was going to name it “A Ilha Querida” in Portuguese).
To celebrate Madonna’s and Lourdes Maria’s legacy, we will cycle from Setúbal (1h South of Lisbon) vía Troia to Faro in the Algarve - because why not! The idea is to have a support car or van along the way - this WON’T be a bikepacking trip, just the usual road cycling.
📆🕒 Date & time: From Friday 22nd May until Tuesday 26th May (cycling days will be 23, 24 and 25 May). You will need to book Friday and Tuesday off work, the Monday is a bank holiday 🌞
💷: we’ve worked costs as of today. Accommodation on the basis of double bedrooms costs roughly £200-250 per person in a shared room for four nights in total. The cost of the support van & driver will depend on final numbers, but worst case scenario of £70 per person if we’re 20 people. Note the support van is just for bags or extreme medical emergency - you should find a taxi if you decide not to cycle.
✈️We won’t be managing plane tickets so you’re responsible for booking your own transportation to Lisbon for Friday 22nd May (and back from faro on 26th May or after). There are trains and buses from Faro to Lisbon (3h journey) in case you’d rather fly into and out of Lisbon.
📍Meeting point for bag drop: 8:00am on Saturday in Setúbal, location TBC
🏨 Accommodation in Setúbal on Friday night, Vila Nova de Milfontes on Saturday night, Sagres on Sunday night, Faro on Monday night
📐Distance per day. Approximately 100km / 62miles, mostly flat

🚴 Pace: this is a journey, not a race. The idea is to do stops along the way for coffee, lunch, sightseeing, enjoying the incredible Portuguese beaches and perhaps die of hypothermia after a dip in the water 💦
