-- Mileage: 5.3 miles -- Difficulty & Description: Moderate -- Expected Pace: About 25 minutes per mile
This trail is a wonderful choice for a walk centered around a peaceful pond setting. One of the highlights of this trail is the chance to observe wildlife. Because of the pond, you might spot beavers! They tend to be busy at dawn and dusk, so keep your eyes open during those times. You could also see turtles basking in the sun, frogs hanging out near the water's edge, and a variety of birds flitting about.
As you stroll along, the trail will also take you through a typical Virginia woodland environment. This means you'll be surrounded by a variety of trees, such as oaks, pines, and maples, creating a lovely, shaded path. Depending on the season, the forest floor might be covered with ferns and wildflowers, adding to the area's beauty.
While this is the expected pace, all GWHVA hikes are at a no-drop pace, meaning we’ll move at a speed that’s comfortable for the whole group and no one will be left behind. On larger hikes with more people, it’s natural for the group to spread out at times, especially on steep inclines or challenging sections of the trail—but don’t worry, we’ll always regroup along the way. Your hike leader and sweep will ensure the group stays together and that everyone gets the rest they need.
-- Parking Instructions: To reach the trail, enter Occoneechee State Park. Turn left at the main gate and follow the park road to take the first left following signs for the Horse parking area/Equestrian campground. Park in the day use area on the left hand side of horse parking area. The trailhead for Beaver Pond trail is at the far left of the parking area. · Occoneechee State Park, Occoneechee Park Road, Clarksville, VA, USA -- Fees: State Park Fees, $7 unless you have a park pass -- Bathrooms: Yes, at parking lot -- Who is this event for? Women+, Dogs -- Weather contingency plan: WIll reschedule if weather is bad -- Preparedness and what to bring: Proper clothing and footwear, water, snacks
