Hello! We are incredibly thrilled to announce that West Seattle Runner will be adding a Racing Team to the lineup of offerings starting January 2026. This has been a long-awaited endeavor and an idea we have wanted to pursue many times throughout the past almost 16 years. We are beyond excited to declare THE TIME IS NOW!
The Why: West Seattle Runner believes strongly in creating community and a space where everyone can feel a sense of belonging. We offer free training groups twice annually that provides structure for training and race twice annually. However, we host our run and walk group all year round and we have many members that race so much all year round. We want these wonderful folks to have a support system and a way to be celebrated as well out there on race day. West Seattle Runner strives to create accessibility to our sport. The race environment can be intimidating at times and having friendly faces and support can make all the difference to increase comfort at the event. We are always so touched and moved by how many runners, walkers, customers and community members are affiliated with the shop, even at times is diffuse ways that are at so many of our local and beyond races. We want a way to be able to unify around this concept and band together and support each other on race day.
The Who: It is very important to note that this is for any runner or walker who is participating in races. This is not something being created only for the sub-elite/fast folks. This is for runners and walker of all paces. The only requirement is that you are going to be in a race. We do not care about pace to be on this team. We will welcome the Boston Marathoner and the last finisher. You do not have to live in West Seattle to participate. But since our shop location is West Seattle, this will be the hub and we want the name connected to our shop's name. You do not have to be a part of our training programs or run group if you are on a different time schedule or train solo.
The What: Our West Seattle Racing Team will offer organization and support around selected races that will include carpool, people to do the warm up with, volunteers to support and be on point to ensure racers have what they need/connection and cheer support, and potentially pacers. There will also be encouragement and team vibes around races being done around the country and the world. The West Seattle Racing Team will also enjoy entry discounts, a specialized logo top special for race day, also training shirts (multiple colors) for those who attend run group, time trials for initial race pace guidelines and track workout paces (something we have not offered at track workouts since around 2012, with reassessment throughout the year, access to our Tuesday track workout (with hills twice annually), PT Nights thrice monthly, regular shoe demos and more.
The Ask: West Seattle Racing Team members offer support to fellow members, be willing to volunteer, promote the team by wearing the gear and if you are so inclined to be on socials, give shout outs for the program and the shop, share your ideas, help us lead this and bring it to life and share the passion for this project.
The Next Steps: On Saturday morning Dec 6th, we are opening up a planning session to this beautiful community. We want to hear from you. Please join us over coffee (and perhaps after you run or walk with us at 8am) to share your ideas/wishlist/suggestions and questions. We feel that this will only be better by having it fueled by you.
TIME OF THE MEETING IS APPROXIMATE, WE WILL HAVE FOLKS DOING GROUP THAT MORNING AT 8AM AND WE HAVE PASTRIES POST RUN, SO IT IS A LOOSE SCHEDULE.
