WALK : MID WALES – Mawddach Trail and Abergwynant Woods
This walk is led by Amanda
Meeting at Penmaenpool car park we will walk past the historic wooden toll bridge and past the George pub. The trail leads us along the side of the Mawddach Estuary with stunning views over to Uwch Mynedd. We will then take the trail up through Abergwynant Woods. This is an ancient woodland full of native trees and plants. We will then return back along the Mawddach trail.
This event is for plus size people of all genders to create a safe and inclusive space. We do not set a size restriction on this, but if you are smaller than a size 18/2XL we would ask you to consider if there might be other groups that you could attend.
This is a 6km route with 107m/ 351 feet of elevation. Much of the path is on wide gravel paths that are generally flat. The walk through the woodlands is on less established paths that can be muddy. The elevation is reached by a series of short inclines with stairs.
We will start at Penmaenpool and walk past the wooden toll bridge that spans the estuary and links Dolgellau to Barmouth. The walk progresses along the font of the George Inn where we can stop for a drink on the way back. The path then goes into a short, wooded area which can be a bit muddy underfoot. At the end of this short stretch the path opens out into spectacular views over Uwch Mynedd and the estuary. We will walk about a kilometre and a half before turning off into the woods. Abergwynant woods are ancient woodlands, and they are full of fungi, plants and animals making for a very picturesque walk. The paths are almost always muddy so we will go slow and take care as these paths are not as wide or well maintained as the trail. There are a number of short inclines with good solid steps and we will take these as slowly as we need with regular rest stops to have a breather. The path down through the woods is a gradual incline and will bring us out back onto the trail. We will walk back along the trail until we reach Penmaenpool again.
