Free 2 Fly and Brave Like Gabe are teaming up on September 14 to raise much-needed funding for rare cancer research!
The Brave Like Gabe Foundation was started by Gabe Grunewald, who ran professionally for Brooks while living with a rare cancer for ten years. The Foundation’s mission is two-fold:
to raise money for rare cancer research, which has historically received far less funding than more common cancers despite rare cancers collectively accounting for over 25% of all cancer diagnoses; and,
to empower cancer survivors through physical activity.
Gabe herself continued running through the many interruptions and uncertainties that cancer brought into her life. She described running as a refuge; “when things seem to be going wrong and the outcomes are far beyond my control, l can find perspective and hope on the run.”
She wanted to share that hope with all cancer survivors—and from that hope came Brave Like Gabe.
Proceeds from this 5k go to rare cancer research. Registration is optional and can be accessed here:

When registering, select “pop-up event” at the top. Towards the bottom of registration, select “Seattle, Washington with free 2 fly run club” in the drop-down menu.
Whether you plan to register or not, we hope you will join us on Sunday, September 14 to learn more about Gabe and the Foundation! Sighted runners that are not paired with a VIP will be invited to pair up and take turns running with a blindfold and guiding with a tether, just as VIP and guide pairs do, if you feel comfortable doing so. Blindfolds and tethers will be provided. Pairing up will be completely optional and we will cherish your presence regardless.
