The 16km route begins over well worn, stoney paths that take us through pretty Blaen Bran Woodland. Some gentle inclines allow us to look down over Blaen Bran reservoir before we tackle some short steeper sections leading upwards. We'll follow a softer path just below the high plain, taking in panoramic views of Cwmbran and beyond. As we continue on towards Twmbarlwm, the route closely hugs a pine woodland over stoney track, with views out to the Severn Estuary. The ground becomes softer and grassy as we approach Twmbarlwm but may be muddy and slippery if it has been wet.
A steep climb will take us to the top og the old fort and it's a short flat walk from there to the trig point. After reaching the Twmbarlwm trig point we'll find a sheltered spot at the fort ruins to refuel and rest.
Following lunch, a stoney track leads us across a heather covered plain with a short diversion to reach the Mynydd Twyn-Glas trig point. We'll skirt the edge of the high plain before descending back to the car park via a steep stoney path.
๐ฅพ Appropriate walking footwear with ankle support is essential due to the stoney terrain in parts. It may be wet, muddy and slippery in parts depending on the weather we have had.
๐ฆ Please note the weather can be very different at higher levels and may vary across the mountain. It is exposed along the high plain and can feel much cooler and be more windy. Appropriate kit such as a waterproof jacket, additional warm layers and personal first aid kit (blister plasters etc) should be carried.
โ No cafe or toilet facilities at the start point or along the route.
๐ Meet in Mountain Air car park. Please allow enough time to get boots/kit on. Please be aware Mountain Road, which leads to the car park is a narrow lane and quite steep in parts.
๐ฉโ๐ฆโ๐ฆ Adult only (mums, aunts, grans, step-mums... women only).
๐ Well behaved dogs are welcome but must be kept on a lead due to roaming livestock. ๐๐๐
๐ฆ Please bring plenty of water for hydration and a packed lunch.
