(Yes, the photo is from another time of year, but we will capture plenty of foliage shots ourselves.)
On Sunday, October 19th we’ll ride Amtrak straight up the Hudson River Valley during peak foliage season, one of the most scenic train rides in the country with blazing colors lining both sides of the river.
We'll arrive in Rhinecliff and walk five minutes to Legion Park which offers spectacular views of the Hudson River and the gorgeous Catskill Mountains painted in their peak fall colors in every shade of red, orange, and gold. Bring your binoculars and cameras to catch the leaves at their brightest.
October is also peak migration season along the Hudson, so binoculars aren’t just for the foliage. Legion Park and the riverfront are good spots to catch sight of hawks, bald eagles, herons, and flocks of songbirds moving south, often soaring right over the Catskills in the background.
We’ll then head by rideshare to the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, where vintage planes take over the sky in a two-hour air show that feels like stepping back in time. You’ll see some of the earliest planes ever built, brightly painted biplanes doing daring tricks, parachutists floating down, and playful aerial chases with multiple planes swooping overhead.
The show ends with the annual pumpkin bombing, when pilots drop pumpkins from the sky for a smashing finish. Surrounded by peak fall colors, it’s one of the Hudson Valley’s most extraordinary fall experiences.
Don't worry we didn't forget about lunch. Before the show begins we’ll have a casual picnic at the Aerodrome at about 1:30 with lots of food options available from the onsite Aviation Grill or you can of course bring your own lunch with you. You can view the Aviation Grill menu at https://oldrhinebeck.org/aviation-grill/
We’ll meet at Moynihan Train Hall at 10am for the 10:20am Amtrak to Rhinecliff. We’ll meet inside Moynihan Train Hall, across 8th Avenue from the old Penn Station entrance. Be sure to go to Moynihan, not the old Penn Station.
Fully refundable Amtrak tickets are $76 round trip. Make sure you get the fully refundable tickets in case the event is canceled for inclement weather. (If you're not sure if you can make it or not lock in the refundable ticket now before they sell out, you can always cancel it later if you can't join us.)
Make sure you book the 10:20am train from Moynihan Train Hall to Rhinecliff, NY, and the 5:14pm train from Rhinecliff to Moynihan Train Hall (arriving in NYC at 7:05pm).
Air show tickets are purchased on site for $37.25, and we'll use rideshares both ways between Rhinecliff station and the Aerodome which come out to about $8 person person round trip.
This trip is weather dependent, since both the foliage views and the air show take place outdoors. If the air show is canceled, the trip is canceled too, and there’s no money lost because you will have purchased the refundable Amtrak tickets.
