Backyard Ultra: Joe plans to run a series of twelve 4.17 mile loops for a total of 50 miles.
Joe will give himself one hour to complete each loop. For reference, if he runs at a consistent 12 minute per mile pace, he will need 50 minutes to complete a loop giving 10 minutes of rest, recovery, rehydration, and refueling before starting the next loop.
Many of you met Joe from his time at the shop. Since then, some of you have shared running adventures and common marathons and relays with Joe.
We sell his book at the shop and all proceeds go to Michael J Fox Foundation.
We would love to have our run community rally around Joe as he does this epic summer adventure! You can participate by running with Joe, cheering or supporting in any way you see fit.
Comment how you would like to be involved or ask any questions below! (Note, we will set up a separate event for each challenge)
Dear Friend,
I hope that your summer has started off well. I'd like to give you an update on some of my plans.

In brief, I intend to explore some adventures that are best described as Type 2 Fun. Type 2 is the kind of activity that is not so much fun while doing it but is enjoyable to look back on. Life is an adventure and adversity enhances the adventure.
As usual, I am doing this to raise awareness of Parkinson's disease and funds for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research. Any donations made in support of my challenge will be matched 3:1!!
Here's my list of Type 2 Fun activities that I will take on starting August 3 and completing on September 1 in my hometown of Seattle:
1.
The 4x4x48 challenge wherein I run 4 miles every 4 hours for a total of 48 miles over the course of 48 hours.
2.
My own version of an abbreviated solo Backyard Ultra. I plan to run a series of twelve 4.17 mile loops for a total of 50 miles. I give myself one hour to complete each loop. For reference, if I run at a consistent 12 minute per mile pace, I will need 50 minutes to complete a loop giving me 10 minutes of rest, recovery, rehydration, and refueling before starting the next loop.
3.
An approximately 50 mile run around Lake Washington.
My hope is to inspire other people, with or without Parkinson's, to invent their own Type 2 adventures to suffer through and look back upon with fondness. I'm also hoping that none of these adventures cross into the realm of Type 3 fun. Type 3 adventures seemed like a good idea at the time but eventually became dangerous. (LOL!)
If you share my passion for funding the research that will bring us a cure for this pernicious disease please consider contributing to my New York City Marathon campaign. Contributions can be made at my fundraising page linked below.
