Taking advantage of the dark evenings while we still have them, this is a social run with a difference.
One of the barriers to running in the city - especially after work in the winter - is that there can be a feeling of being unsafe. Until the spring comes proper, these Wednesday evening sessions are designed to provide you a safe space to try running in the dark. And if you’re already comfortable with this, then come along to embrace the group spirit and have a chat.
We’ll be doing a loop of the central part of Hampstead Heath, using some of the concrete paths and some forest trails. We'll meet at Gospel Oak station so we start with some light, before heading into the Heath proper. What I hope is to give you opportunity to explore running in the dark, so we’ll do a few drills with low light and no light. It can be both liberating and scary, and a useful tool should you be in the middle of a race and your torch battery dies!
Needless to say, this will not be a faster-paced session and we’ll stick together as a group. We’ll be aiming for 7min/km, potentially slower especially if it’s folks’ first time running uneven ground in the dark, and it’s the Heath so there will be a couple of hills.
Road shoes are generally fine for this route, but it is March so parts could still be muddy and grip may be useful. A head torch or body torch is required (but not your phone), or at the very least some body lights (like the red armbands) so you are visible. If you don’t have a torch and you’re unsure if you’ll keep up with night running, rather than invest, I’ll have my spare torch with me (please DM so you bagsy it).
Meet: Outside Gospel Oak Overground Station entrance.
Distance: 5.2km ish, plus the bits for the drills.
Pace: Set aside an hour. We’re not speeding ahead with this one.
Please cancel if you can no longer make it, or a the very least DM on Instagram @ne_london_mrp / @01010011steele
